“The Land Closer to the Sky” Exhibition Series

Photo Exhibition & Charity Sales

Since early 2024, our team has organized two collective field trips to the source region of the Yellow River in Qinghai.

There, we immersed ourselves in the daily lives of local herders and interviewed eight herders who shared their stories about musk deer conservation, water source protection, pastoral life, wildlife photography, and local myths and folklore. Together, we also helped install and check infrared cameras, waited in the wild to photograph animals, and climbed glaciers and snow-covered mountains.

We brought back thousands of photos, carefully selected over a hundred, and presented them to the public. These works have been displayed in four exhibitions — two on campus and two open to the public — each serving as a new way to connect and converse with the community.

Beyond photography, we continue to explore new creative forms of expression:

  • Designing original merchandise: hand-painted canvas bags, scented candles, and upcoming picture books and musk deer brick models
  • Producing short documentaries: capturing the lives of herders, the ecology of the Yellow River’s source, and our journeys across the plateau — offering a genuine glimpse into daily life in the highlands

Our four curators are Pang Yibin, Zhang Zhixing, Xu Xiaoming, and Chen Jiwei. Photography contributions were also made by Ms. ChenMr. Han, and our fellow travelers who joined us on the plateau. We extend special thanks to the Plateau Nature Conservancy and to the teachers and students of Beijing Mingcheng Academy for their ongoing support and companionship.

Through continuous visual storytelling and exhibitions, we hope to bring the stories of nature, ecology, and culture to more people — and to inspire more hearts to pause, listen, and act for the voices that are quietly disappearing.
